The Atlanta History Center and Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System are teaming up to present The Big Read, a campaign to get adults (and kids) reading, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.This year’s book will be Luis Alberto Urrea’s Into the Beautiful North, and there will be related programs in September and October including a keynote address by the author on Sept. 17, 7p.m. at the Atlanta History Center.In conjunction, younger readers are encouraged to participate in The Little Read with I Love Saturdays y domingos by Alma Flor Ada, while middle school ages can read Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan.For a complete calendar of events, visit

Street closures and detours will begin in downtown Atlanta Tuesday so highway work crews can start replacing the 92-year-old Spring Street viaduct over CSX railroad tracks.Weather permitting, the northern end of the project on Spring Street will be closed and traffic diverted to a posted detour route. The detour is scheduled to remain in place through the fall of next year.At that time, a second detour plan will be put in place for work at the southern end of the project.The area to be affected…
